Introducing ... Flicka
Flicka is a beautiful little chestnut pony mare, possibly a shetland, between 12-15 years old.  She has a white blaze on her face, a long forelock, thick mane and tail and the largest, most beautiful eyes.  Flicka arrived at Field of Dreams this past Sunday and is adjusting well.  She is extremely sweet, has a wonderful low-pitched nicker and is enjoying a stall guard that's "just her size" so she can see what is going on at the barn.
Although much of Flicka's past is unknown, we were told she used to be a parade pony for children.  Approximately five years ago, the barn Flicka resided in caught fire and although she survived, it made her frightened of humans.  After the fire, her owner no longer wanted her and a neighbor took over her care.  Last year, the neighbor had to relinquish Flicka through no fault of her own and she has been in foster care ever since.  Flicka's caretaker succeeded in making her less fearful of humans, but she still has a way to go.
FOD's rehabilitation program with the daily love, care and attention we provide is the perfect environment for Flicka to thrive in.  We are grateful to have been a part of Flicka's rescue, along with Kelly Walter Owens of Hands and Hooves Riding, Rescue & Rehabilitation and Roz Wilde
Welcome little Flicka - we are so happy to have you with us!

Welcome to the Board of Directors
We are pleased to announce that Gindi Orloff has joined the Field of Dreams Board of Directors.  Gindi has been volunteering at the barn since November 2015 and has been a shift manager since April 2016.
Gindi was asked to become a member of the board because of her many accomplishments since joining FOD.  For example, Gindi helped us successfully apply for a re-purpose of a $2500 grant for solar heated water tanks.  This past fall, Gindi co-chaired our first annual Run for the Rescues 5k and used her prior grant experience to help us successfully apply for a $2500 electric fencing grant.  Earlier this year, she also wrote a large grant application for paddock footing with the results of that application due sometime this month.  Along with our treasurer, Gindi is currently working on increasing awareness about Field of Dreams within the equine products market.
Gindi and her husband moved from the east coast 11 years ago and currently reside with their two sons in St. Charles.  We are extremely grateful to Gindi for her dedication to Field of Dreams and look forward to working alongside her as a member of the board.

Willow's Recent Surgery
Recently, Willow's veterinarian discovered that she had a broken canine tooth which needed to be completely removed.  Dr Humphrey, of Valley Animal Hospital, successfully performed the surgery last Wednesday under general anesthesia.  Willow has been on "tack room" rest since then, receiving her pain medicine and meals from the shift managers each day.   She seems to be tired of the tack room and often tries to escape.  We are quite certain Willow will be very happy when her confinement ends this Wednesday and she can resume her normal "barn duties" alongside her best friend, Fred.

Checking in with Leo
- by  Kathy  Rerko-Smith

On February 9th I had the pleasure of going to Tower Hill Stables in Hampshire to visit one of our former rescues who actually visited us at our very first 5K last fall, Leo (formally Beau).
Leo is a beautiful chestnut gelding thoroughbred who was not with us long before he found his forever home.
Leo is a barn favorite at Tower Hill because he acts like a puppy dog. His owner enjoys weekly Hunter/Jumper lessons and regular riding 4-5 times a week. She plans on showing Leo this summer. Thursday night is usually fun night riding horses bareback with friends.
Leo has also participated in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. This is a program for middle and high school riders where they get to ride a horse that is not known to them. Leo had numerous people ride him and he did a great job, even winning ribbons.
As seen here, professional photographer Andrew Ryback took some lovely photos of Leo and his owner for her Senior class picture.
